What is really in the Glassfibres Reinforced Concrete (GRC) planter?

I. Definition

Glassfibre Reinforce Concrete (GRC) is a composite material comprising a mixture of hydraulic cement, silica sand, alkali resistant glass fibres and water. The glass fibres in GRC effectively reinforce the mortar mix thereby improving its tensile strength and characteristics. Fiber Reinforced Concrete can be defined as a composite material consisting of mixtures of cement, mortar or concrete and uniformly dispersed suitable fibers. Fiber reinforced concrete are of different types and properties with many advantages. Continuous meshes, woven fabrics and long wires or rods are not considered to be discrete fibers.


Fibers include steel fibers, glass fibers, synthetic fibers and natural fibers. Within these different fibers that character of fiber reinforced concrete changes with varying concretes, fiber materials, geometries, distribution, orientation and densities.

II.The advantage of GRC

The main advantage of GRC pots over the corresponding concrete alternatives is the considerable saving in weight. This results in savings in the costs of transportation, handling and erection.

Fibres are usually used in concrete to control plastic shrinkage cracking and drying shrinkage cracking. They also lower the permeability of concrete and thus reduce bleeding of water. Some types of fibres produce greater impact, abrasion and shatter resistance in concrete.

The role of the fiber reinforcement in concrete is to repair cracks that may develop in concrete due to environmental factors such as drying or due to loading conditions.

If the fibers are strong enough, stiff enough, and present in sufficient quantity and develop sufficient bonds with the cementitious matrix, they serve to keep the crack widths small and will permit the GRC to withstand significant stresses over a relatively large strain capacity.
